Birds and Bird Watching at Bay Farm Holiday Cottages

There is rich and varied bird life at Bay Farm and on Rosehaugh Estate - bring your binoculars and a field guide.
The Great Spotted Woodpecker can often be heard drumming nearby in the spring. In summer Red breasted Mergansers, Cormorants, Oyster Catchers and the occasional Diver visit the waters of the bay to feed and there is usually an Osprey fishing at low tide. You can spot an Osprey by watching for Seagulls mobbing the larger Osprey after it has caught a fish. Fulmars nest on the cliff on Craigiehowe on the opposite side of the bay.

In October large skeins of Geese return after their long flight from the artic and fill the bay with their wild honking cries. Munlochy Bay is a winter feeding ground for migrating birds including Greylag and Pinkfeet Geese, Redshank, Godwit, Curlew, Whimbrel, Dunlin and Wideon. When the tide is out the water's edge is lined with Herons fishing for flounders in the mud.

As you drive down the hill the farm track wends its way through the beech trees and you may catch a glimpse of a Buzzard or Sparrow Hawk swooping ahead of the car. Red Kites and Buzzards nest in the woods around the bay and often soar in flight above the cottages on a windy day. Tawny Owls hoot in the evening and. The sound of Wrens and Blackbirds singing is wonderfully amplified for you, if you have time to stand in the old quarry on a summer's morning. Skylarks Grey Partridges and Peewits nest in the fields above the farm.
